I’m the furnace repair guy in Fredericksburg Virgina. I’ve been in this business for over 20 years, and in that time I’ve learned a lot about furnaces. I usually arrive at the end of a long day, the workday done, everything quiet except for the whirring of my truck’s engine as I pull into the driveway. The door opens into the basement, where there’s a furnace that is not working. And there are two people standing there: a husband and a wife, maybe, or if it’s an apartment building, maybe one tenant standing next to her landlord. And they are so worn down from being up all night listening to the furnace trying to start and failing that they’re too tired to even be angry anymore. And I’m just getting started: my coffee hasn’t even kicked in yet.
