Do you cover your HVAC unit in the fall and winter? Should I wrap it in plastic or a tarp to protect it from the elements?
The short answer is no, you should not cover your outdoor HVAC unit. In fact, you can damage your HVAC system if you cover it up. But there are some things you can do to make sure your system stays protected through the cold months.
Why don’t I need to cover my HVAC unit?
Your HVAC system was built to withstand the elements year-round. It’s designed with materials that can handle rain, snow, sleet and even hail. Your condenser coil and compressor are made of metals that can take a beating and keep on ticking. If your manufacturer suggests covering your unit, they will usually provide some sort of cover for it. But most units don’t require any additional protection.
How can I help my HVAC unit last through the cold months?
Even though your outdoor unit is built to handle the elements, here are a few things you can do to keep it operating at peak performance:
Trim back bushes and trees from around the outdoor unit so there’s plenty of space for air flow. Keep leaves and debris cleared away.

Straight AC unit can be covered in the wintertime. It keeps it nice and dry. It also makes me feel better about things, since I know the isn’t doing anything to help the unit itself, but I like to keep it clean and dry anyway. Hoever make sure you remember to remove the cover in the spring or before you decide to turn the Air Conditioning on in your home
I don’t think there is any harm in covering your unit, but when you have it proffessionally serviced at D and L Mechanical Services covering it doesn’t really do anything for you, either.
