You may have also seen mentions of federal HOMES and HEAR rebate programs potentially worth thousands of dollars for income-qualified households. These are real programs with real funding allocated to Virginia, but as of this writing, Virginia has not launched either program, per Virginia Energy’s own program status page. The state is still finalizing paperwork with the U.S. Department of Energy, and there’s no confirmed launch date yet.
If you’re considering a project now and hoping to apply HOMES or HEAR funding toward it later, be aware that these programs typically do not reimburse work completed before the program officially launches. We won’t tell you to wait indefinitely on a program with no launch date, but we also won’t pretend it’s available today when it isn’t.
It would be easy to publish a flashy “$14,000 in rebates available!” headline technically true somewhere, misleading here. That’s the same price vs. cost thinking we apply to everything else: a number that sounds good today but doesn’t hold up once you actually try to use it isn’t worth much.
